The minutes of the BWMIC begin with its first meeting in July 1973. The records contain agendas, reports, and exhibits, as well as minutes. Each set of agendas and minutes contains an index. The volumes from 1973-1981 are bound, numbered, and arranged in chronological order. The numbering sequence is a continuation of the minutes of the Board of World Missions of the Division of World Missions (see TALC 14/1). The minutes from 1982-1987 are unbound. Box 10 contains minutes and agendas of the board meeting in executive session. Matters of salary, sabbatical requests, and staff position descriptions were considered in executive session, closed to staff and visitors. Although this box of records had been marked as confidential, and they would have been restricted at the time of their creation, there is nothing to restrict them for historical research.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Representatives from each of the constitutent churches formed the Joint Union Committee in 1950 to effect the merger. Presidents of the constituent bodies at the merger were Henry F.
